Concentrates and distillates

Thermal separation: How concentrates and distillates are produced

Distillation and concentration are processes for the thermal separation of substances. They are used in various industries. DEVEX offers solutions for the production of concentrates and distillates. Read on to find out what it's all about.

Added value through reduction

A concentrate is produced from a multi-substance mixture in which at least one substance is evaporated using heat in order to achieve a higher concentration of the remaining substances. This is usually a solvent. Fruit juice, for example, can become a concentrate by evaporating the water. This concentrate can later be diluted again with water to restore the juice. In most cases, it is simply a matter of separating the products from their water content. Concentrates can also be obtained by non-thermal methods such as membrane filtration. DEVEX also offers appropriate plants for this technology.

A well-known example is syrup: In the food industry, syrup is particularly valuable because of its reduced transport weight. Less liquid means less weight and significantly lower transport costs. In addition, less water extends the shelf life. Only when the products reach their destination is the desired concentration restored with water.
A distillate, on the other hand, is a substance obtained by thermal distillation. In this process, the respective product is separated into different components due to its different boiling points and condensed. One example of this is ethanol, which is produced through the thermal distillation of maize or grain mash.

DEVEX offers solutions to a wide range of industries, including the food, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, for the production of concentrates and distillates.
